Between the 4th and the 6th of July 2022, the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) — in partnership with the Sant’Anna School, the Scuola Normale Superiore and the University of Pisa — organises the General Conference of the Standing Group on Organised Crime (SGOC) involving scholars and practitioners from all over the world.

Following Naples (2015), Bath (2017) and Sofia (2019), Pisa will be the fourth city to host the largest event of this kind in Europe, which will be titled “Crossing territorial and disciplinary (b)orders: empirical, analytical and policy perspectives on organised crime”. Highlights of the event will be the keynote speeches by Professors Donatella Della Porta (Scuola Normale Superiore) and Dina Siegel (University of Utrecht), who will respectively tackle mobilization strategies against organised crime and the crime-conflict nexus in the context of the current Russian invasion of Ukraine. The President of the Tribunal of Palermo Antonio Balsamo will be also present for a special plenary event on “The legacy of Italian judges in the fight against organised crime. Remembering Judges Falcone and Borsellino”.

Three roundtables will take place at the General Conference: one dealing with communities’ online and offline mobilisation against organised crime, with Emmy-winning journalist Siria Gastelum-Felix, Professor Alice Mattoni (University of Bologna), and Professor Nilda Garcia (Texas A&M International University). The second roundtable focuses on the conflict-crime nexus, with Professor Francesco Strazzari (Sant’Anna School), Yuliya Zabyelina (City University of New York), Dr. Vanda Felbab-Brown (Brookings Institute), Dr. Peer Schouten (Danish Institute for International Studies), and Professor Anna Sergi (University of Essex). The third roundtable, to be held online on June 6th, will instead address the nexus between environmental crimes and illicit markets, with Professor Rosaleen Duffy (University of Sheffield), Prof. Tanya Watt (University of Northumbria), Simone Haysome (Global Initiative against Organised Crime) and Dr. Annette Hubschle (University of Cape Town).

With a broad geographical reach touching upon regions such as Latin America, Europe and the Far East, the conference will cross interdisciplinary borders of research dealing, among other topics, with the role of women, the impact on the environment, and emerging online threats. Considering the logistical and the security challenges emerging from the Covid-19 pandemic, the conference will be hybrid, thus partially hosted on Pisa universities’ campuses and partially online.
