Maria Chiara Carrozza, professor of Biomedical Engineering at Biorobotics Institute, former rector of Sant’Anna School and current member of Italian Parliament, has been appointed as the president of the Italian National Bioengineering Group, serving as faculty members and researchers representative.

The Italian National Bioengineering Group promotes policy coherence and operational coordination in the research activities of Italy’s Bioengineering core sector; the academic disciplines involve Industrial Bioengineering ING/IND-34 and Electronic and Computer Bioengineering ING/INF06. The biomedical engineering is one of the most successful sectors of engineering in terms of total number of students enrolled and is considered one of the best degree subject in terms of employment prospects. The demand for bioengineers is increasing: with an aging population and a growing focus on health-care issues, the trend is expected to continue for years.

As the new President of the Italian National Bioengineering Group, Maria Chiara Carrozza would succeed Riccardo Pietrabissa, professor at the Polytechnic University of Milan, who finished his mandate. The election took place during a meeting of the Bioengineering Group Board of Directors, at Milan Polytechnic University. The activities of the newly elected President will be supported by the Council of the Bioengineering Group which includes professors, researchers, and students representing the relevant scientific community. Professor Riccardo Bellazzi, University of Pavia and Maria Gabriella Signorini, Milan Polytechnic University, have also been elected to the Board of Directors.

"I am honoured to have been elected as the President of the National Bioengineering Group - says Maria Chiara Carrozza - and having worked in the scientific community of bioengineers for over twenty years. It is a great privilege for me to serve as the Group President. I will immediately start working together with the members of the Council to continue the work in support of training, research and development in bioengineering. We are developing strategies to accelerate the progress toward Industry 4.0, as demonstrated by the recent investment plans of the government for the creation of Milan Techno pole and the Competence Centres network ".
