Examining how the almost unique experience of an "open" prison on the island of Gorgona can become a benchmark for the entire penitentiary system is one of the main goals of the framework agreement, signed Friday, July 15th, between Sant'Anna School of Pisa and the Livorno Prison, section of Gorgona. The signing ceremony was attended by Justice Minister Marta Cartabia.

The purpose of the activities, which will be carried out by Sant'Anna School, is to identify and critically analyze the peculiarities that make the "Gorgona model" more functional for the realization of the reeducative function of punishment set forth in the Constitution. The convention also includes activating collaborations with the world of the Third Sector, enhancing the regulatory tools in force. Moreover, thanks to interdisciplinary competences (from law to agronomy, from management to circular economy), the collaboration will be able to offer innovative solutions aimed at making the Gorgona experience even more effective and sustainable. With this in mind, the production activities carried out on the island will also be evaluated in order to further reduce their impact on the environment and to consolidate their economic sustainability.

The agreement was signed by Sabina Nuti, rector of Sant'Anna School, and Annarita Gentile, director in charge of the prison. The ceremony was joined by Sant'Anna School Full Professors Emanuele Rossi and Alberto di Martino, the latter the scientific referee for Sant'Anna School of the agreement, together with Associate Professor Elena Vivaldi; the regional superintendent of the Penitentiary Administration for Tuscany and Umbria Pierapaolo d'Andria; and the Counselor for Social Policies of Livorno Andrea Raspanti, delegate of Mayor Luca Salvetti. Justice Minister Marta Cartabia concluded the ceremony.

On the occasion of the signing ceremony of the agreement, there was a visit, with the participation of Justice Minister Marta Cartabia, to the facilities of the Marchese Frescobaldi, who, on the island of Gorgona, has launched a social project in collaboration with the prison, in order to make prisoners acquire new professional skills, with a view to their reintegration into society.
