OPTICAL COMMUNICATION NETWORKS AND INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH ACTIVITIES: EARLY STAGE RESEARCHERS IN “MARIE SKLODOWSKA-CURIE” H2020 PROJECT MENTOR DESIGN NOVEL SYSTEMS FOR MULTI-BAND NETWORKS PERFORMANCE MONITORING
The global Internet traffic has increased at an exponential rate over the past decade. In the context of such extraordinary traffic growth, communications networks will need flexible and scalable solutions. High-capacity multi-band systems will address these new major challenges and guarantee improved performance over a broad spectrum. The EC Horizon 2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network (ITN), in promoting interdisciplinary innovation and multidisciplinary research activities as well as early-stage researchers career development will provide doctoral training in wideband optical networks through the collaboration of academia and industry.
By involving the non-academic sector in doctoral training, the European Industrial Doctorates (EID) supports joint PhD programs through the MENTOR initiative. Sant’Anna School in Pisa offers 2 PhD positions in the field of machine-learning-based optical transmission system control. Doctoral students will focus on machine-learning-based network functions for optical performance monitoring, failure detection, restoration, and for network optimization.
Together with Sant’Anna School and industrial partners in Portugal, Germany, France, and Italy, high profile partners Aston University (project coordinator), Technical University of Denmark, and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya have joined the EID Consortium MENTOR. Successful candidates for the Marie Curie fellowships will undertake research leading to a jointly awarded degree under the 'co-supervising' programs at these partner institutions.
Researcher Nicola Sambo from the Sant’Anna School TeCIP Institute (Communications, Information and Perception Technologies) Networks and Services area serves as the research supervisor and scientist-in-charge of this 48-month MENTOR which started on 1st January 2021.

PhD candidates in Marie Skłodowska-Curie actions will benefit of doctoral-level training network and rich interactions between academia and industry at international levels.
