THE EVOLUTION OF BIONICS FROM 1989 TO TODAY
In June 1989 Paolo Dario, full professor at The BioRobotics Institute of the Sant'Anna School and and Pro-Rector for the Third Mission, Giulio Sandini, founding director at the Italian Institute of Technology, and Patrick Aebischer, emeritus professor at EPFL (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) organized a workshop by the title: Robots and Biological Systems: Towards a New Bionics? Contributions from the workshop’s participants were collected in a Book published by Elsevier in Volume 102 of the “Computer and Systems Sciences Series”.
Looking at the text after 32 years, it seemed timely to re-propose the same question and analyze the evolution of the research themes both in terms of today’s achievements and in highlighting the excessive simplifications of the time made evident now by the advancements of knowledge and technology. The discussion will be animated by a group of participants of the 1989 workshop and organized around two round tables addressing the two intertwined streams of bionics research: bodyware and mindware.
THE WORKSHOP PROGRAM
The workshop is based on two discussion sessions: “Bodyware and mindware” and “Mindware and bodyware”.
The speakers for the first discussion session ("Bodyware and mindware") are: Atsuo Takanishi (Waseda University), Toshio Fukuda (Meijo University), Rodney Brooks (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Marc Raibert (Boston Dynamics), Massimo Bergamasco (Istituto di Intelligenza meccanica, Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna), Kenneth Salisbury (Stanford University), Antonio Bicchi (Università di Pisa), Danilo De Rossi (Centro di ricerca Enrico Piaggio).
The speakers for the second discussion session ("Mindware and bodyware") are: Pietro Morasso (Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia), Neville Hogan (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Ferdinando Mussa-Ivaldi (Northwestern University), Giuseppe Casalino (Politecnico di Bari), Concetta Morrone (Università di Pisa), David Burr (Università degli studi di Firenze e CNR Pisa), Ruzena Bajcsy (University of California), Tomaso Poggio (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Blake Hannaford (University of Washington).
