Nature-based solutions in the WEF NEXUS world. Application, case studies and market perspectives
The Institute of Crop Science of Sant’Anna School organizes, on Wednesday, October 23 from 2:15 p.m., the hybrid workshop “Nature-based solutions in the WEF NEXUS world. Application, case studies and market perspectives” (Sala Conferenze – Palazzo Pilo Boyl/Online).
Abstract
While climate change is posing at risk traditional water resources management, there is the urgent need to devise low-energy and low-impact solutions to adapt the environment, societies and economies to this threat. At the same time is nowadays clear, how challenges such as increasing population and related increasing demand for food and energy constitute challenges of primary importance at global scale.
The Water, Energy, Food Nexus approach stresses the relevance for coordinated management of scarce resources along with agricultural production processes, and at the same time provides opportunities for devising, testing and operating new and smart management infrastructures both in the rural and urban settings.
The workshop, an outcome of the EU PRIMA NEXUS-NESS project, and organised within the WAT-CHANGE Seasonal School, aims at introducing the participants to the new growing area of nature-based solutions providing water-related ecosystem services with low-energy demand.
In particular, speakers will introduce nature-based solutions for water supply, water treatment, and flood risk mitigation such as river restoration, constructed wetlands, sustainable drainage systems, and remediation of contaminated sites using phytoremediation techniques.
The workshop will offer the possibility, beside showcasing technical solutions, to discuss ethical and gender issues, the innovation and market perspective, and to discuss the state of the application of nature-based solutions in the WEF Nexus world.
