Fabian Gerd Meder
Bio
Fabian Meder is an Associate Professor at the BioRobotics Institute of Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Pisa, Italy since 2024.
He graduated in Bio- and Nanotechnology from South Westphalia University of Applied Science, Germany in 2008 and obtained a PhD in Materials Science with highest honors from University of Bremen, Germany in 2013 on surface interactions of biomolecules and functionalized materials.
He worked at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (EMPA), Zurich, Switzerland (2007-2008); as a Postdoc at the Centre for BioNano Interactions at University College Dublin, Ireland (2013-2016); at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany (2016); at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light, Erlangen, Germany (2016-2017); and as a Researcher at the Bioinspired Soft Robotics lab of the Italian Institute of Technology, Genova, Italy (2017-2024).
Since 2022, he holds the National Italian Habilitation (ASN) as Associate Professor in Physical Chemistry (CHEM-02/A).
In 2023, he received the ERC Consolidator grant for the project “EpiC: Epicuticular electrification: spontaneous charging of materials at the world's largest bio-air interface"

Ricerca
His research focuses on surface phenomena and their impact on processes in nature and technology. This includes phenomena ranging from spontaneous charging to molecular interactions, aiming to exploit and develop functional surfaces.
Specifically, he is currently interested in charge formation and energy conversion mechanisms through liquid and solid contact electrification on artificial and especially biological surfaces, exploring possible effects on organisms and applications in integrated systems as autonomous microenergy sources for electrocatalysis, sensing, and robotics.
