Tiago Fernandes is a postdoctoral researcher in the Surface Phenomena and Integrated Systems Lab at the BioRobotics Institute of Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, under the supervision of Professor Fabian Gerd Meder.

Tiago obtained his BSc (Biochemistry, 2011) and MSc (Nanochemistry, 2015) degrees from Madeira University. His MSc thesis was developed in the Madeira Chemistry Research Centre (CQM, University of Madeira) and involved the functionalization of dendritic macromolecules for in vitro cell tracking. In 2017, Tiago started working in the nanoLAB group, CICECO, University of Aveiro, as a Research Fellow. His work during that time involved the design of biohybrid magnetic nanoparticles for the uptake of pollutants from water samples. In 2022, Tiago obtained his PhD degree from Aveiro University, Portugal (nanoLAB research group, CICECO, under the scientific guidance of Prof. Tito Trindade and Dr. Ana Luísa Daniel-da-Silva), where he developed a series of dendrimer-based magneto-plasmonic nanostructures intended as optical sensors for surface-enhanced Raman scattering probing of pesticides in water samples. From 2022-2024, Tiago was a postdoctoral research fellow at INL, Braga, Portugal (Nanochemistry/Kolen’ko group), where he was responsible for large‑scale synthesis and characterization of magnetic metal oxide nanoparticles and perovskites OER electrocatalysts for the SpinCat European Project (https://www.spincat.eu). Tiago’s main research interests are nanochemistry, biohybrid nanomaterials, polymer chemistry and multifunctional magneto-plasmonic nanoparticles for energy, catalysis and environmental applications.
