We welcome Prof. Giovanni Comandé as an affiliate of the Department of Excellence.

Prof. Giovanni Comandé has become an official affiliate of EMbeDS in September 2019.

Giovanni is a Full Professor of Private Comparative Law at the DIRPOLIS Institute of the Sant'Anna School. He holds a PhD from Sant'Anna and an LLM from the Harvard Law School. He is a member of the Italian State Bar in Pisa, and an attorney at Law and member of New York State Bar in the US. His research interests include law and technology, trustworthy AI, data protection and privacy, ethics and legal issues in research, tort law and personal injury damages, comparative law, European law and private law, health law, information society law (privacy, e-commerce and algorithm regulation), ADR.
At Sant'Anna, he is the founder and director of the LIDER-LAB. He is also the founder of Smartex s.r.l. (www.smartlex.eu) a Spin Off of Sant’Anna, and a mediator and member of the Board of Directors for the Organismo Conciliazione Pisa of the Tribunal of Pisa.

Internationnaly, he has been visiting Professor at the Washington and Lee School of Law, USA (summer 2014); Université Laval (2013; 2019-20); Maastricht University (2018-2020), ; the Fordham School of Law, (2012); the Université Panthéon Assas Paris II, (2007); the Hebrew University (2005); the Wake Forrest University School of Law (fall 2003) and the Yale Law School  (1995 and 1997) -- teaching, among other topics, Comparative Electronic Business Law, Tort, and Privacy.  Professor Comandé was Jean  Monnet  Chair of Human  Rights and Remedies for Personal Injuries in European Community Law: An Interdisciplinary Approach (1994-2001).

Giovanni has led several research projects funded by the Italian Ministry of Education and Research, the Italian National Council of Research, the European Science Foundation, the European Union, the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Public Administrations, and various public and private companies and organizations. He is the director of several top ranking law journals (“Opinio Juris in Comparatione” and “Rivista di Medicina Legale e del Diritto in Sanità") and a member of the Editorial board of several others in Italy and abroad. He is also an external scientific and ethics expert r for the EU Commission, the National Research Foundation – Research and Innovation Support and Advancement of South Africa, the University of Haifa and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel; the Italian Agenzia Nazionale di Valutazione del Sistema Universitario e della Ricerca, and the Fonds Québécois de la Recherche sur la Société et la Culture.

Giovanni authored 5 monographs, edited or co-edited 14 collective works, and published more than 195 articles and notes in major law reviews and book chapters in Italian, English, French and Spanish.

He is currently an elected  member of the American Law Institute (www.ali.org), a member of the group drafting the Principles of European Tort Law (PETL) (www.egtl.org), a member of the European center for Law and Insurance in Wien (www.ectil.org) and a member of the European Law Institute (www.europeanlawinstitute.eu).
