The Complexity Modelers Society (CoMoS) is an interdisciplinary community of  young researchers sharing ideas, resources and expertise in computational economics, agent-based modeling, complexity economics, statistics, data science, and more.  

CoMoS activities are coordinated by  the Institute of Economics and the EMbeDS department of excellence (Economics and Management in the era of Data Science), but encompass researchers from other Institutes of the School, PhD students from multiple programs (e.g., Economics, Management, Data Science) and many external participants. They are organized around distinct but interconnected themes. To date, these themes are: 

CoMoS Climate Change (CCC): CCC connects researchers working on subjects related to climate change from various perspectives, including political economy, data science, complexity economics, statistics, data science, climatology, the geosciences and agri-genomics. The CCC core group comprises scholars from several Institutes (Economics and Life Sciences) and the interuniversity 3CSA Center, as well as Universities abroad (e.g., Penn State University and Columbia University). CCC aims to promote data-driven, multidisciplinary and innovative approaches to a complex topic such as climate change, its impacts on our societies and our planet, and the policy tools we can adopt to face them.

CoMoS Science Technology and Innovation (CSTI): CSTI connects researchers working on subjects related to science, technology and innovation with different perspectives, objectives and tools. The CSTI core group comprises scholars from Sant’Anna School and Scuola Normale Superiore. CSTI has a broad research agenda including topics in science of science, the economics of innovation, network modeling, micro-econometrics, statistics,  and computational social sciences. It  supports collaborations and fosters methodological, empirical and policy-oriented contributions.

CoMoS Economic Dynamics (CED): CED connects economists, statisticians, computer scientists, physicists and engineers who create and use  agent-based models (ABMs) and computational tools to investigate  macroeconomics and finance issues. The CED core group is composed by scholars from the Institute of Economics at Sant’Anna and its extended network, comprising OFCE Nice (France), the University of Campinas (Brazil), Maastricht University (the Netherlands), the Università Cattolica of Milan (Italy), Scuola Normale Superiore (Italy). CED aims to enhance our understanding of macroeconomic and financial dynamics by promoting and disseminating best practices for the design, implementation and use of ABMs. 

CoMoS organizes regular meetings of internal and external participants to present and discuss ongoing research.   It also organizes technical workshops, e.g., on tools for data processing and visualization, code sharing via GitHub or Colab, software usage. CoMoS members regularly showcase their recent research in the LEM Working Papers Series, and contribute to the CoMoS and EMbeDS GitHub repositories.

CoMoS is coordinated by Francesco Lamperti and Andrea Vandin. The point-persons for the current themes are Matteo Coronese (CCC), Martina Iori (CSTI), Daniele Giachini and Emanuele Russo (CED) -- and we look forward to expanding the range of our activities with new themes over time.
