Post-Covid19 pandemic and the role of the State: a simple maintenance work to heal the cracks and ruins caused by austerity policies and their damages to the social and economic condition of the country, or a true reconstruction to affirm, thanks to the public handuniversal rights (work, education, health in the first place), that is to feed the protagonism of the State to invest in the economy of innovation, in quality services and in the fight against inequalities? The presentation of the volume “Public is better”, published by Donzelli, scheduled for Thursday 8 April at 4 pm will focus on this basic question.

After the introduction by Roberta Lisi, curator of the volume together with Altero Frigerio, the discussion will involve the undersecretary of the Ministry of Economy and Finance Maria Cecilia GuerraAndrea Roventini and Giovanni Dosiprofessors of Economics at the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna in Pisa, the economists Emanuele Felice and Laura Pennacchi. The Director of the Institute of Economics of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna di Pisa Alessandro Nuvolari will moderate. The debate will focus on the feasibility of a new public intervention that today, at the time of the Next generation EU, means spending to build the future, starting from the strategic sectors of infrastructures (including intangible ones), schools, research, health, services and public administration. The interviews presented in the book face the various issues that the pandemic has emphasised.

The ecological transition and the green new deal can be addressed in opposite ways. Precisely for this reason, the centrality of the public and of the innovative state are essential for developing a model of productionconsumption and welfare based on social justiceredistribution, and  help to the poor. Similar arguments can be applied to culture and tourism promotion, to education, to the repositioning of our economy as well as to the themes of agriculture and made in Italy, and finally on the woman new deal, that must become a daily practice and not to remain a mere statement.
