Sensorimotor Neurotechnology Lab

The Sensorimotor Neurotechnology Lab (SNL) - based at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan - develops modular neuroprosthetic solutions to restore movement and sensation for people with sensorimotor impairments. Our philosophy is to design interoperable modules—spanning neural decoding, stimulation, and sensory interfaces—that can be adapted across conditions, from amputation to spinal cord injury. Research follows two axes: rehabilitation, promoting recovery and neuroplasticity through targeted closed-loop interventions, and assistance, enabling immediate functional capabilities via robust, user-ready systems. We adopt a technology-agnostic stance, using noninvasive, minimally invasive, or implantable approaches as justified by scientific and clinical needs. While motor decoding and movement restoration are central, a distinctive focus is the restoration and enhancement of sensory feedback—including touch, proprioception, and thermal cues—essential for embodiment, performance, and user satisfaction. By merging modularity, technological flexibility, and bidirectional human–machine integration, SNL aims to deliver neuroprosthetic systems that are adaptable, effective, and truly life-changing.
