A training and research programme closely linked to the relevant issues of our time, aimed at graduates from all over the world, selected through a competition, with a strong aptitude for scientific research and interdisciplinary development. The Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa has published the call for applications for admission to the Ph.D. courses for the academic year 2025/2026: from robotics to economics, from sustainability to digital technologies, from agrobiodiversity to translational medicine, from management to human rights, the ten Ph.D. courses aim to dynamically link basic and applied research, with a strong focus on the need for innovation, also from the industrial world and public institutions.

All the open positions are fully funded: the scholarship, which also includes a budget for research and activities to be carried out abroad, is renewed annually following an evaluation by the Ph.D. Course Faculty. The Sant'Anna School also makes it possible, through an annual call for applications, to take advantage of all residential services in certain selected facilities.

Candidates may participate in the selection process, without nationality restrictions, if they hold at least one of the following qualifications: Degree under the old system; Master's Degree, Single Cycle Master's Degree or Specialisation; Similar qualification obtained abroad, recognised as equivalent to the aforementioned second level academic qualifications, for the sole purpose of participating in the competition for admission to the Ph.D.

The employment rate after the Ph.D.

A unique opportunity to enter an environment of academic excellence and start a successful professional career: the picture that the Almalaurea 2023 survey paints is very promising. One year after graduation, 99% of those enrolled have already obtained important job positions and for 62% research continues to be the main activity of their job, whether in a university or business environment.

"Our doctorates are not only a high-level academic programme, but a real gateway to the world of research and innovation. From day one, students are involved in national and international research projects, working closely with leading experts and organisations. This means not only acquiring solid academic skills, but also developing a network and a wealth of experience that prepares them for the world of work, whether in academia, industry or institutions. And the Almalaurea data proves it," says Fabio Iraldo, academic senate representative for Ph.D. courses at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies.
