Embark on a groundbreaking interdisciplinary journey at the Ph.D. programme in Human Rights, Global Politics, and International Studies.
At the heart of our programme is a commitment to fostering curiosity and open-minded exploration. We seek ideal candidates who are ready to embrace the rich diversity of disciplines and approaches we offer.

Positioned at the intersection of law and politics, this programme delves into five key research areas:

Agricultural, Food, and Environmental Law: This research area investigates the regulation of agri-food systems across international, EU, and domestic legal orders. It explores both the relationship between agriculture, environmental protection, and climate objectives, and the influence of international and regional trade regimes on the organisation and sustainability of agri-food value chains. (Faculty Members: M. Alabrese, E. Cristiani, A. Saba. External member: G. Strambi).

Public International Law: This area includes, but it is not limited, to humanitarian law, criminal law, disaster law, the law of international organizations, and collective security law. We have a particular expertise in the protection and promotion of international human rights and the rule of law, particularly in contexts of armed conflict, post-conflict societies, disasters, and other emergency situations  (Faculty Members: E. Sommario, F. Capone, L. Gasbarri)

European Studies: This area focuses on the political and constitutional implications of European integration, combining the study of the EU with comparative analysis of European law, policies and political systems. The area also pays attention to the interaction between national and supranational levels and the external dimensions of the Union. In doing so, the programme provides a critical perspective on current and future challenges of supranational dynamics, highlighting the EU’s distinctive nature while drawing broader insights from comparative law and politics in Europe (Faculty Members: G. Martinico, D. Natali, T. Popic. External member: S. Giusti,)

Political Philosophy: This area, which includes the realm of global ethics, is focused on the socio-techno-political challenges emerging from the contemporary world. Such challenges are approached according to a conceptual, intersectional and critical perspective. The area’s components offer deeper insights into the following lines of research: methodology of social and political sciences; theoretical foundation of human rights; climate ethics and philosophical groundings of sustainability; posthuman studies, philosophy of technology; political forms of conspiracy theories and denialisms (Faculty Members: B. Henry, A. Loretoni, A. Pirni, M. Solinas)

International Relations: This area focuses on the analysis of security, conflict, and governance in global and transnational contexts, with particular attention to the interaction between states, non-state actors, and informal power structures. It adopts a critical and empirically grounded approach to contemporary international dynamics, examining political violence, regime change, migration, and illicit networks across regions. In doing so, it combines comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives to address current and future challenges in international politics. (Faculty Members: F. Strazzari, L. Achilli, K. Koehler, L. Raineri).
